The goal of the Virginia WWII Heritage Alliance Teacher Fellowship is to support teacher professional development, facilitate the creation of World War II education materials, and encourage a creative dialogue on history pedagogy, while strengthening ties between Virginia’s World War II museums and Virginia teachers.
The Fellowship carries a stipend of $200 to help cover transportation and requires a commitment to attend a total of three five-hour in-person sessions in July 2020, and a remote virtual session in December 2020.
SESSION 1: Wednesday, July 15 at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond, Virginia
SESSION 2: Wednesday, July 22 at the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia
SESSION 3: Wednesday, July 29 at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia
Parking and lunch are provided at each session. At the end of the program, all Fellows will be required to complete a final project. Final projects are due by December 2020.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
All Virginia K-12 educators are welcome to apply for the 2020 Teacher Fellowship. This includes public, private, and homeschool educators in addition to curriculum coordinators, librarians, media specialists or other individuals who spend time providing instruction to students. Those who teach subjects other than history and social studies are welcome to apply as long as they explain in their application how they intend to incorporate World War II lessons into their curriculum. All applicants must be a full-time educator in Virginia during both the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years.

I’m not a history teacher. Can I apply?
Yes – we welcome all disciplines as long as you possess basic knowledge of World War II history. Public, private, and homeschool educators are also encouraged to apply.
Do I have to attend all the sessions?
Yes – attendance is mandatory at the three sessions. Failure to attend all sessions may result in forfeiture of or a reduced stipend.
Do I have to be a Virginia educator?
Yes! Sorry, no exceptions here.
When do I get my money?
Stipends will be awarded at the final session at the National D-Day Memorial on Wednesday, July 29.

Notifications of selection for the fellowship will occur in April 2020.
What are the expectations for the final project?
Each Fellow is committed to developing a final project following the summer’s workshops. Fellows are welcome to choose any topic related to World War II, and should use the final project to highlight the resources of Virginia's World War II sites. Options for the final project include:
- Leading a professional development session at the school or district level for other educators
- Creating a minimum 15 minute long educational video appropriate for classroom use
- Writing and publishing an article in an education journal
- Developing a semester or year-long project for the classroom
- Presenting at a conference
- Another project approved by the WWII Heritage Alliance
